Terje Håkonsen dominated freestyle snowboarding competitions during the 1990s. He is known as one of the greatest snowboarders of all time, having the greatest impact on the sport. He has shown his high proficiency and flowing freestyle in snowboarding for all types of terrain such as; free-riding powder, big mountain riding, and "Big Air" competitions. He is set apart as a forerunner of today's slopestyle competitions.
In 2007, Håkonsen set the world record for the highest air achieving a height of 9.8 meters above the top of the quarterpipe during a qualification round at The Arctic Challenge in Midtstuen, Oslo, with a backside 360.
